Coach Stewart Press Release
JOHN STEWART TO BECOME NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT YUCCA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
Stewart led the Silver Valley Trojans to the 2017 CIF Championship Game

(Yucca Valley, CA) - In the decade before John Stewart became the Head Football Coach at Silver Valley High School (Yermo, CA) the program had just one winning season. He inherited a program that was just 1-9 and ranked #1,050 in the State in 2012. Just five seasons later they were playing for a CIF Championship, won 9 games and moved up to the #463 spot in the state. (For comparison sake, YVHS was #716 in 2018.)

When Dakota State University hired a Graduate Assistant, there were 200 applicants. Coach Mike Esposito “just saw something special in John Stewart” and hired him.

Simply put, John Stewart is a difference maker. And now we are proud to announce this difference maker is the new Head Football Coach at Yucca Valley High School.

Principal Justin Monical explained “Yucca Valley High School is excited to enter into the next era of Trojan football with the quality of coach and character that John brings to the program. His energy and positivity are infectious. This is a tremendous opportunity for future generations of Trojan student-athletes.”

“John provided a classroom environment where students felt completely comfortable and engaged in learning.  He built relationships of trust and respect with his students. Beyond the classroom John was an exceptional coach serving as Head Football Coach, and Assistant Basketball and Baseball Coach,” explained Silver Valley Principal Mike Sullivan.

"We are excited to have Coach Stewart as a part of the Trojan community and look forward to seeing him guide students to success both on and off the field," said Athletic Director Adam Wright.

Stewart started coaching high school football in his home state of Washington back in 2002 where he coached until 2006. At that point he moved to the collegiate level at Dakota State University where he coached Wide Receivers for two years. His next stop was in San Diego where he rejoined the high school ranks. He spent time as the Offensive Coordinator at Southwest High, the Defensive Coordinator at Kearney High and the Offensive Coordinator at Barstow High before becoming the Head Coach at Silver Valley in 2012. He has coached high school Track and Field as well as Baseball and Basketball.

“I'm very excited to be the next Head Football Coach at Yucca Valley. The opportunity comes at the right time for my family and me. We are all very excited to be a part of the Yucca Valley community, and start the next chapter of our lives as Yucca Valley Trojans,” said Coach Stewart.

At Silver Valley, his teams set multiple school records including 48.2 points per game in 2014, which ranked 7th in the entire state. His Trojan teams reached the playoffs in 2014, 2016 and 2017, and won the school’s first ever League Championship in football. In two seasons, his defense allowed the fewest points per game during league play. He developed more than a dozen All CIF and All League players at Silver Valley.

“When we first started this search, we developed a profile of what we wanted: someone who has had a measurable level of success at a desert high school. John Stewart brings that to our school. He comes to us highly recommended, going back 15 years, every person we spoke with speaks very highly of Coach Stewart,” explained Assistant Principal Chris Fore.

“Coach Stewart took us to the only CIF Championship, in any sport, that our school has ever gone to. In our entire school history, our 2017 football team is the only team to reach the CIF Finals. He got the most out of his kids. The way John sees the game, and his preparation, those are his two greatest strengths. His ability to motivate kids to perform at their very best, to play hard and together is another strength of his,” Mike Meyer, current Athletic Director at Silver Valley High School said.

Stewart was a four year lettermen at Bethel College in Kansas where he played Quarterback. His career extended for the South Sound Shockers, a semi pro team in Washington. He earned 2nd Team All American honors, and was the Conference’s Player of the Year in 2007.

Booster Club President Licia Judd said, “As a parent and part of our Trojan Football Booster Club, Coach Stewart came in with a combination of skills and experience. His positive attitude and mindset will be an exceptional fit to both YVHS and our football program. I am truly excited for our school and Trojan football players.”

Stewart takes over for JD Thompson who resigned for personal reasons in January.
