Scholarship Guidelines

To apply for the scholarship, applicants should submit a short story or informational article for children (400-800 words) to along with their full name, age, and current school level info. 

Stories and articles will be rated from 0-5 based on the following criteria: 

Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest

Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest

Award Ammount: $5,000, $3,000, $2,000

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all high school students (9th through 12th grades) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. Each student’s five- to six-minute speech (and accompanying manuscript) will be judged based upon its composition, delivery, significance, and historical accuracy and relevance. Three cash awards are given: the National First Place Winner receives $5,000; the 2nd Place Runner-up receives $3,000; and the 3rd Place Runner-up receives $2,000 cash prize.

  • Student must be currently enrolled or expected to enroll in at least a 2 Year degree program by September.
  • Be a US or Canadaian resident and plan to attend college in the US or Canada
  • Have a 3.0 GPA or better.
  • Submit an answer to the essay question by the deadline
Essay Topic: Write an essay about a situation you or someone you know has been involved in where better safety procedures would have prevented injury. Explain in detail what safety procedures you feel should have been in place to prevent the injury and how they would have prevented it.

783 million people worldwide do not have access to safe, clean water. In developing countries, as much as 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. Given the resources of today’s technological age, how can the problem of clean water be resolved?

Choose one solution and in 600-800 words explain how this idea would specifically impact developing countries.

                                                  Awards Available: 1020 
The Career & Technical Scholarship Program is funded through the Horatio Alger Endowment Fund and the generosity of Association Chairman Emeritus and Endowment Fund President Walter Scott, Jr.  Scholarships are awarded to students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their lives who wish to pursue a career or technical education at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States. 
To be eligible for the Career & Technical Education Scholarship, applicants must:
  • Be under the age of 30 at the time of applying. 
  • Be a United States citizen
  • applicants must have earned a high school diploma, high school equivalency credential, or will complete this requirement by the application deadline.
  • Will be enrolled in eligible program in Fall 2018
  • Demonstrated critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)
  • Demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity

Alert1 is offering a $250 scholarship to a student attending an accredited U.S. college or university who wants to help seniors. To apply for this scholarship, follow the instructions below. Submit the online application form and answer the following three questions (under 300 words each):

  1. What is your experience with seniors?
  2. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from seniors?
  3. How will you help seniors in your chosen career?
