The next meeting of the Morongo Unified School District Enrollment Committee is scheduled for next week as the group continues reviewing district enrollment data and discussing school facilities.

At a March 4 meeting, district staff presented an overview of long-term enrollment trends and discussed how declining student numbers are affecting school operations and academic programs. Because state funding is largely based on student attendance, lower enrollment results in reduced revenue for schools.

Staff explained that smaller campuses bring in less funding while still facing many of the same fixed operating costs as larger schools. As a result, the district relies on funding generated by higher-enrollment schools to help support campuses with fewer students.

Community members spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, sharing concerns about how possible district decisions could impact students, families and school communities. Speakers emphasized the importance of carefully considering factors such as learning environments, campus capacity and potential transitions that students and families could face if changes are made.

The Enrollment Committee will continue reviewing data during upcoming meetings. Recommendations developed by the group will be presented to the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education for consideration.
